Hanal Pixán: Food for the Souls

1 min read

In Yucatán, the days dedicated to remembering those who are no longer with us are celebrated in a very special way. Hanal Pixán is a Maya tradition whose name means “food for the souls.” It brings together altars, candles, flowers, photographs, and traditional dishes prepared especially to welcome the spirits of loved ones.

One of the most representative elements of this celebration is the pib, or mucbipollo, a large stuffed tamal traditionally cooked underground. During this season, you can also find altars, offerings, and cultural activities throughout Mérida and different parts of Yucatán.

In Mérida, the Festival de las Ánimas is part of the Hanal Pixán celebration, with activities such as altars, parades, and cultural events. For 2026, the city announced activities from October 24 to November 2, so it is a good idea to check the official schedule before planning your visit.

Sacbé Tip: If you visit Yucatán during this season, take the opportunity to try a traditional pib, visit the altars, and experience one of the Festival de las Ánimas activities. The program changes every year, so be sure to check dates and times before heading out.
